A commentary on the Special Issue “Innovations in measuring and fostering mathematical modelling competencies”

This is a commentary on the ESM 2021 Special Issue on Innovations in Measuring and Fostering Mathematical Modelling Competencies. We have grouped the ten studies into three themes: competencies, fostering, and measuring. The first theme and the papers therein provide a platform to discuss the cognitivist backgrounds to the different conceptualizations of mathematical modelling competencies, based on the modelling cycle. We suggest theoretical widening through a competence continuum and enriching of the modelling cycle with overarching, analytic dimensions for creativity, tool use, metacognition, and so forth. No evidence of systematic pre-emptive loggings after notifying landowners of their lands’ conservation potential

Landowners can intentionally impair biodiversity values occurring on their land to pre-empt biodiversity protection. This often leads to significant negative effects on biodiversity. We studied whether landowners in Finland engaged in pre-emptive loggings after they were notified that their wooded mires are candidate sites for a mire protection program. After the notification, harvesting rates of the candidate wooded mires were significantly lower compared to harvesting rates of similar but non-candidate wooded mires. Expectancy in Sami Yoiks revisited: The role of data-driven and schema-driven knowledge in the formation of melodic expectations

This study extends a previous study concerning melodic expectations in North Sami yoiks (Krumhansl et al., 2000) in which a comparison between expert and non-expert listeners demonstrated the existence of a core set of principles governing melodic expectancies. The previous findings are reconsidered using non-Western listeners (traditional healers from South Africa) in a modeling investigation. Comparison of different models made it possible to separate the role of data-driven and schema-driven models in melodic expectancies and to reveal any possible Western bias in previous studies. Understanding the Context of Teacher Professionalism in Education Systems Undergoing Transition – Kosovo Case

Abstract This qualitative case study examines teacher professionalism in Kosovo in light of its rapidly developing education system. The study involves 14 teachers at the beginning of their careers (1-7 years of experience) examining teacher thinking against the evolving stages of teacher professionalism, namely pre-professionalism, autonomous professionalism, collegial professionalism and post-professionalism. Woven folklore: computers promoting cross-cultural understanding

Multicultural cooperation requires participants to understand the cultural background and identity of all the partners. In this respect, computers provide the cooperation with a new and interesting instrument. A team of students from two schools, one in Tanzania, another in Finland, implemented a multimedia version of an African folklore story. A computer served as a platform for genuine cooperation: the whole team worked on one electronic artefact, despite the geographical distance between the members. The collaborative process helped each participant to clarify his/her own cultural background whilst also becoming acquainted with that of his/her distant partner.
